Goals

During the 5 PM class today I realized that folks struggling with things like; double unders, pull ups, etc, are maybe lacking goals.  Sure, we all want to be in better shape.  We come to the gym, hit the wod’s, but one year later we still can’t do a double under, etc.  Maybe because we’ve accepted the mundane as normal.  Not having goals is like going on a road trip without a map.  Sure, we all want to acheive super elite fitness, but what we need are short term goals.  I have a 455 lb max deadlift, my goal is to one day get 500 lbs.  This can be attained by setting a deadline and of course, lifting big weights.  I’ve put up a goal list on the white board.  Join in, put up a goal and give yourself a deadline.  Make it realistic, acheivable…10 more pounds in my shoulder press, kipping pull ups, or maybe handstand push ups.  Next step, work on it!  Come early, stay late…take advantage of open gym time, or even bust it out at home.  Set a goal and go for it, your firepower family will cheer you on!!

That’s awesome Brian. I’d recommend you add a risk-reward to your goal. Put some stake in it to make it achievable. Then let us hold you accountable. I can think of some good risks….(Furpees!) or maybe a solo Fran in front of EVERYONE!

    Great idea.

OK, let me be the first. I’m gonna kick myself in the bag for doing this but here goes: I’m gonna run 5km on April 1st. It doesn’t sound like much to most but if there is one thing i truely and royaly suck at, it’s running. This would become one of my proudest accomplishment. If i’m unsuccesfull, i’ll do 500 burpees ( 100 for every km i should have run).

  4. Mark says:

Well done Brian, maybe it is a like an early New Years Resolution Page!

  5. Brian says:

I think giving deadlines makes you work on your weakness, and don’t stop with just one. Make a short term goal, then follow it with a long term, eg; fran in under 5 min short term, esar race in summer, long term! Just some thoughts, bottom line, throw them up for all to see and encourage!

oh great !thanks Steve. Guess i have to run my 5k non stop too.My shorter term goal 300lb deadlift by my bday (mar13).

  8. Vik says:

I guess we’re gonna be seeing a LOT of people doing pull ups for the next while, myself included.
Love this idea Brian. Its a great motivator to have a goal written on the board for everyone to see and harass you into working on it!!

  9. Tonya L. says:

Ok here goes nothing: 3km run nonstop by May 1, 2010, Real pullup unassisted by May 1, 2010
Also I used the orange kettlebell for the first time tonight; I am telling everyone so that you keep me accoutable and I don’t reach for the yellow one next class

  10. Dawn says:

OK, as a newbie, I will join in.

#1 – figure out what all of these new terms mean – Turkish get-up I learned last night – for the life of me I cannot remember what a double under is but, if my work cooperates, I hope to learn later today
#2 – Do a chin up, unassisted, within the year (baby steps…..)
#3 – Do 10 push ups, from my toes, in 6 months.
#4 – Stop complaining (usually to myself) when we have to run. i.e. learn to like running
I consider #2 & #3 as my real, measureable goals.
Thank you for the kick start Brian and all. Dawn

Okay, after thinking long & hard, I have decided to post my goals so that all of you can hold me ‘accountable’ ;-) :
    1. Lose that last 15 lbs by March 31, 2010
    2. Be able to do an unassisted pull-up by May 31, 2010
    3. Do a charity 5K run in the summer/fall time

I’m sure this list will grow as I find more weaknessess that I need to work on- that’s why I love crossfit!!!

  13. Brian says:

You guy’s are awesome…these goals are all within reach, perhaps all you’ve needed was a kick start!!

Check these out from Freddy at http://crossfitoneworld.com

1.Not having goals, both short term and long term. A fitness regimen with no goals is like driving to a destination you have never been to before without a map or directions. Goals keep you on track. You seek out guidelines and information on how to achieve them. Make those goals!!!

2.Avoiding your weaknesses. Why is it everyone and their mother shows up on the days we do some crazy workout, but when weightlifting days or running days come up, people suddenly don’t feel so well??? Weaknesses stem from a series of issues. Suck at an Olympic lift? It is probably tied into deficiencies in the strength and flexibility department. Can’t get through that whole 5k run? You need to eat better and build up your cardio/respiratory endurance. Attack your weaknesses and your strengths will improve.

Keep up the good work everyone!

The pullup bars will defintily be crowded.

    Short term goal
Drop 10 more pounds by Feb 5 2010
Do double unders without tripping, falling or causing my shins to bleed

    Long term goal
10 consecutive unassisted pullups by Apr 1 2010
    Run 5k by July 1 2010

  15. Carmen says:

I heard this quote in a meeting today and it was so appropriate for this posting I thought I’d share it and see if this changes any of our goals posted to date.

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.”
    — Michelangelo Buonarroti

My original goal when starting Crossfit was to get that one unassisted pull-up by April 2010.
My new goal is Jan 31, 2010 but I’ll be pushing real hard to try to squeeze it in by Dec 31, 2009, that is if there’s room on the bar!

  16. SHAWNA says:

Been working on a little goal the last two months, training for a little 5k Race Dec 31. After that a 10 k is next on my bucket list.
Longer term– to improve those pullups and do a real rope climb!

  17. Victoria Staight says:

Great idea Brian, yes I do believe in goals, that is why I am walking today. Setting small goals that turn into long term goals.

My goals for this year are:

    Goal #1 Do 10 ball slams 8lbs by March 31, 2010
Goal #2 Do 1 Burpee properly by March 31, 2010 ( I suck at these big time)
Goal #3 Be able to jump on and off the boxes smallest one first by the end of January 2010
Goal #4 Be able to RUN 400k with out stopping by April 30, 2010
Goal #5 improve gradually on all the other workouts
